Peanuts Revisited

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

Seems like my post on [tag]boiled peanuts[/tag] caused quite an internet stir. Aside from the comments here, I’ve had several other comments in other venues about them. One of my friends who was pretty outspoken about how yucky she thought boiled peanuts would be has been issued a challenge. Yes, indeed, I have thrown down the gauntlet, and submitted that recipe to Loretta’s Just Not Martha. If she accepts the challenge, we’ll find out how her whole family feels about this fine southern delicacy. If she doesn’t…well, I’ll just have to call her a big ol’ [tag]Yankee Loser[/tag].[tags]Just Not Martha[/tags]

State Boat

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

I guess it’s no great surprise that a state as tied to the water as our state is would have a state boat, and we do. In 1987 the shad boat was adopted as the official State Historical Boat. This type of craft originated on Roanoke Island. These Shad Boats have not been made since the 30s, because their construction was very expensive. The boats were originally made from native woods, and were prized for their maneuverability in shallow coastal waters. The Museum of the Ablemarle is currently involved in a Shad Boat Restoration Project.

Big Weather

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

I was listening to the news tonight, and heard the anchor say that “they” are predicting a heavy storm season this year. (He also said they predicted a light season last year, which is absolutely not true. Well, maybe it’s true, but he either lied then or he’s lying now, you decide.) Anyway, I went to CNN to get the rest of the details, and found the 2006 predictions. They had indeed said a heavy storm season was coming!

I tracked down the 2007 predictions on USAToday.com. For now, I am saying what most residents of coastal North Carolina say: “we’ll see”.[tags]hurricanes[/tags]

Duke Players Innocent

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

Have you heard this? I doubt you could have missed it, because it’s been all over the news. To recap, several months ago some players on the Duke Lacrosse team were accused of sexually assaulting an exotic dancer at a party. The players were white, and Duke is a very expensive, prestigious school. The girl in question was black, so the media made much ado over the racial overtones, and the DA went right along with them. He’s had charges filed against him by the ethics board for his actions in the case. You can read more at CNN.

Our State

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

Have you seen this magazine? I was at the bookstore awhile back, and bought [tag]Our State[/tag]. It’s all about North Carolina. It’s chock full of articles and pictures about the people, places and things that make [tag]North Carolina[/tag] a great place to be. I totally need to subscribe to this magazine! My mom did buy another issue, for me, she says. Funny, but she’s still got it, LOL!

Tartan Day

Friday, April 6th, 2007

Today is [tag]Tartan Day[/tag]. This day celebrates “existing and historical links between Scotland and Scottish descendants overseas. In the United States there are over 11 million people who claim Scots descent”. I happen to be one of them, and there are many more in this state. In fact, it was a North Carolinian who sponsored the House Resolution to acknowledge National Tartan Day on April 6th. :)

We’re celebrating statewide, too!

Some North Carolina Bloggers for ya!

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

I’ve had a few responses to my call for North Carolina bloggers, and I am ready to share them with you. I would like to make this a regular feature (perhaps even a carnival?) so if you are a NC blogger and missed letting me know this time, be sure and leave a comment.

First up is Grandi13. This happens to be my mama, ya’ll! She’s a pretty new blogger, but she’s catching on real quick. She talks about cooking, too!

Next is the delightful Ron. He’s a comedic genius. He blogs at What’s All This Then. He also blogs at a couple of other places. He’s a pretty busy guy, so he forgot to respond to my request for his other blogs. Catch me on the next go round, Ron, and I’ll hook you up!

Last up is Moose. He blogs about hunting, fishing and wildlife over at Moose Droppings. He has pictures, ya’ll. Lots of wonderful pictures.

I’d love it if the three of you could let your readers know I talked about you. Perhaps they’ll even wish to be in the next post like this.
